When I like something, I tend to really, really like it. Obsession is too strong a word but I am devoted to the things I love.

Hawaii is one of them and, the weird thing is, it has that effect on a lot of people.

I was chatting to my friend Phil and he said that there is a theory about Hawaiian ‘mana’, meaning energy or magic. The story goes that it gets into your DNA and calls you back. He has been 75 times and keeps returning.

I have only been three times but I feel that pull. Every time a discount airfare is released, I click through and check the dates. I bought a print of an old Hawaiian poster for The Spark and I’s bedroom, I listen to Hawaiian music, order Mai Tais in bars and have kahuna massages whenever I can.

For me, it’s not about the shopping or anything flashy. It’s about the warmth of the weather, water and welcome. Hawaiian people are special. Their connection to their islands, families and ancestors is enviable.

The other funny thing is that I am drawn to people who love Hawaii. It’s like the magic seeks itself out, like a vine seeking light. It then grows and binds us into this big old Hawaii fan club.

If you would like to read some of my other stories about Hawaii, here’s a link to Big Island Top Five, a hotel review of The Royal Hawaiian, an Oahu and Kauai Top Five and a piece about Hana, one of my absolute favourite places in Maui.

  1. I have a rule; with so much of the world to see – don’t go back to the same place. Hawaii makes me break this rule. All the aloha. I’m so excited to visit again in January and take a friend to share the joy with. xox

  2. We had our honeymoon on Oahu and Big Island nearly 8 years ago. Since then we have been back twice, also visiting Maui for the first time. Hawaii keeps luring us back and we will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on Kauai in a couple of years!
