Best ways to become more sustainable at home

You may be wondering what you can do around your home to become more sustainable. You may have changed your ways recently and want to be kinder to the planet. If everyone made small changes then the world would become a lot happier. However, with so many cases in the media about what is right and what is wrong, it can be hard knowing what steps to take. Check out the article below for some helpful tips and tricks.

Recycle, recycle, recycle

One thing you can do, and something people have been doing for years, is recycle. You might already be doing this, and that’s great. However, is there anything more you can do? Rather than just recycling, how about reusing bits and pieces dotted around your home. For example, hot chocolate pots could become pen holders. The term recycle, reuse, reduce is very fitting for this. Bear that in mind when you are trying to see what can be recycled and what can’t.

Use renewable energy

There is renewable energy available to everybody now, it is just a matter of finding the right one to supply your home. Many homes now have solar panels on the roof, solar power is great and you could even get a solar hot water system for your home. Taking that next step in your journey with renewable energy will make such a difference. You will also notice a change in your energy bills.

Switch off devices

Instead of placing your devices and appliances on standby when you aren’t using them, try switching them off instead. While this can seem long and arduous, you will be saving so much more energy. It might just be a case of flocking a switch each evening when you go to bed, or each morning when you are heading out to work. Two things that should never be switched off are your fridge/freezer and your internet modem. Most internet companies carry out updates and work overnight, so if you switch your modem off then you will miss out on these. Everything else can be switched off perfectly fine.

Only use when full

Finally, this is something really important to remember. If you don’t have a full dishwasher, washing machine, or other cleaning appliance then don’t switch it on. This will be a huge waste of energy and cost you more each year to run. If you wait until it is full and then switch it on then you won’t be doing half loads all of the time. It can be tricky if you live alone to get a full washing machine. However, if you then only wash once or twice a week then you will be doing wonders for your energy bill and subsequently, your wallet.

We do hope you found this article helpful and it gave you some ideas on how you can become more sustainable in your own home. There will always be smaller changes you can make, these will go on to make a world of difference.
