5 places you need to visit in regional Australia
Australia is a country overflowing with beautiful, fun and interesting family holiday destinations to spend your holiday. Once you get outside of the eight capital cities, you’ll find there are thousands of villages, towns and out-of-the-way places to kick your heels up in.
To help you plan your next great Australian family holiday, here are five fun regional destinations to add to your wish-list.
1. Chinchilla, QLD
The traditional land of the Barunggam people, Chinchilla is found in the Western Downs region of Queensland, some 300 kilometres from Brisbane. A big fruit-growing town, there are events year round for visitors to see and participate in. There’s no shortage of places to stay and accommodation facilities such as Kings Park Accommodation offer a peaceful place to stay for short or extended visits. If you find yourself on the Warrego Highway, stop in and try the watermelon – it’s worth it.
2. Margaret River, WA
For those who love a great wine tour, Margaret River is a perfect destination. Three hours south of Perth in Western Australia, and nestled between beautiful, rolling countryside and one of Australia’s most notable beaches on the west coast, it’s perfect for a couple’s holiday away. Wine lovers are not the only ones who will find something to love at Margaret River, either – foodies will never want to leave.
3. Seal Rocks, NSW
The New South Wales coastline has no shortage of incredible beaches but Seal Rocks ranks among the finest in the nation. Located two hours north of Newcastle, Seal Rocks is perfect for a low-stress family getaway. This laid-back stretch of white sand is perfect for anyone who needs a break or chance to unwind. Even if you’re one of many who already live near an Australian beach, you owe it to yourself to see this one.
4. Litchfield National Park, NT
An hour-and-a-half south of Darwin in the Northern Territory lies Litchfield National Park. Covering a staggering 1459 square kilometres, the park is filled with things to see and do. Part of any worthwhile visit to the Australian top end, Litchfield is a popular tourist destination but for those who love a hike or enjoy getting off the beaten path, its massive size makes it easy to get away from the masses.
5. Lorne, VIC
Many visitors to Victoria enjoy a relaxed road trip down the Great Ocean Road toward South Australia but there’s a hidden gem on the way, only about two hours out of Melbourne. Lorne, famed for being the home of the yearly Falls Festival music event, is a sleepy beachside town the rest of the year and is full of lovely people. It backs onto the Great Otway National Park, making it perfect for hikers and beach bums alike.
These are just five Australian regional holiday destinations – there are quite literally thousands of others dotted all across the nation. What are some of your favourite rural holiday spots? Please share your suggestions in the comment section below.
