How to make time for exercise when you’re a working mum

One of the hardest things about being a working mum is finding time to exercise. Between work, kids, and chores, there are never enough hours in the day. And if you’re like most people, that doesn’t even include taking care of yourself! So how can you make time for exercising when you’re a working mum? I’ve compiled some great tips to help you stay healthy while juggling everything else on your plate.

Make your health a priority

Firstly, prioritise your health. If exercise is essential to you and part of a healthy lifestyle, then find the time for it no matter what else is going on. Ensure that this goal stays above other demands and responsibilities so that it doesn’t get pushed aside when something more urgent comes up. You might even want to block out the time in your calendar so that you are 100% certain that you can do it.

Ask for help from your partner or spouse

Second, if you have a partner or spouse willing to help with childcare, then make sure they know how important exercising is for you and ask them to help take care of the kids while you go to the gym, for a walk, or take an exercise class. They’ll likely be more than happy to help out, and it will give you some much-needed time to focus on yourself.

Use technology to your advantage

Third, use technology to your advantage and take advantage of online workouts, fitness classes, or exercise bikes that you can use in the comfort of your own home. If you love sports, invest in some accessories or high-tech equipment such as golf simulators. There are many different types of online workouts to choose from, and most of them only require a laptop or phone and an internet connection. If you don’t have time for a whole hour-long workout, there are plenty of shorter ones to choose from as well.

Take your children with you on a walk

One great way to get in your daily dose of exercise is to take your children with you on a walk. This can be especially beneficial if they are young, as it will help them get some exercise. Plus, it’s always lovely to spend time together outdoors. If you have an older child, try going for a walk to the local park and playing a game of soccer or baseball.

Organise your time efficiently

One of the most important things you can do as a working mother is to stay organised. This will help you manage your time efficiently and give yourself more time for exercise or personal activities that are pleasurable like reading, cooking, decorating, etc. Start by writing out a plan with timetables on what needs to be done each day and where you can find free time to fit in some exercise. You will need to plan and schedule everything so that you are prepared for what needs to be done at each moment of the day when the day comes.

Having a busy life with two jobs isn’t easy for any working mum, but it’s essential to exercise. If you want to be an example of health and wellness for your kids, plenty of ways doesn’t involve spending hours at the gym. So don’t think about how much time you can spare; think about how much time you need. Fifteen minutes of exercise is better than nothing, and it’s an excellent place to start.
