How to save money on car rentals in Sydney

EpilepsyDrivingNYC_night_high_speed_car_driving-hdAustralia is a great holiday destination and Sydney is one of the most popular stop-off points for tourists. So if you are thinking of spending your next holiday in Sydney, here are 5 top tips to help you save some serious cash on the cost of car hire at Sydney airport.

1. Look for coupons online before you leave
Most car rental companies will offer promotions, specials or coupons, which can save you a substantial amount of money on the cost of hiring a car. So before you leave home, search for the name of the rental company online and find a coupon or an offer that will still be current when you arrive in Sydney. You can easily save up to 50% off the overall costs of car hire at Sydney airport, just by using a coupon.

2. Arrange to pick up your car at Sydney airport
Whilst the cost of rentals at airports is usually more expensive than hiring a car in the suburbs, (because of airport taxes) airports are more likely to have newer models available than more distant locations. So if driving a newer model car is important to you, renting at the airport is more likely to give you the car you want and also give you the added convenience of not paying for a taxi or taking public transportation from the airport.

3. Negotiate the costs with the rental company
Even if you land at the airport and haven’t already organised a car rental, it is always good to negotiate the price. A big tip here is to pop outside the airport and check on how many cars each rental company has standing idle in the lot at the airport. No rental company wants their cars stood idle, so if you know which rental agency has the most cars in the airport lot (which is usually just outside the arrivals area) you stand a much better chance of reducing your hire costs, because they want their cars on the road.

4. Book your car for longer than you really need it
This only works if the rental company doesn’t have an early return penalty, so make sure of this before you use this strategy. The reason this works is because the longer the rental period for a car, the lower your costs. If the rental company doesn’t have an early returns penalty, then you can drop off the hire car early, whilst only paying the lower rates. Also, don’t forget to try and hire a car during the week, as it is usually cheaper than on a weekend and hire for more than 7 days if possible, as this also results in a substantial saving.
So if you are in the market for car hire at Sydney airport, these four tips should help you make significant savings on your overall costs.
