The View From The Peak Tram

Hong Kong in a heartbeat

By Megan Aney

Living in Australia can be a bit of a hindrance for the global traveler. My partner and I wanted to go on a short international break mid year but with only four days to spare we had to visit somewhere that wouldn’t require too much flying or jetlag. We decided on a trip to Hong Kong, with only a two hour time difference from Sydney and an eight and a half hour flight, we were sold. Virgin Atlantic and Cathay Pacific offer direct flights daily so we were in Asia’s World City in a heartbeat.

Here are a few tips on how to do Hong Kong in just a few days:

Friday: Take a Ride on The Peak Tram

The Peak Tram is a hundred year old public transportation system and has got to be the steepest tram in the world; it almost feels like the beginning of a rollercoaster on the way up. Grab a window seat to watch the skyscrapers in the distance. It’s a great way to get a quick scenic tour.

Saturday: Visit Causeway Bay

This area is a true microcosm of Hong Kong’s shopping scene. Get lost exploring the 13 levels of Times Square shopping mall, check out the upmarket stores on the street or visit the SOGO department store for more mid-level buys (read: affordable). Make sure to stop for a moment and people watch; the locals and Chinese tourists come in droves to shop on Saturdays.

Saturday: Eat an egg tart with a milk tea

A famous afternoon sugar hit is an egg tart with a milk tea. The tea is made through a sackcloth bag and most teahouses have a good view of the kitchen so make sure to order one and watch the traditional process.

Sunday:  Take the Star Ferry to Harbour City

Although there are multiple ways of getting from Hong Kong Island to the mainland, many people still opt for the iconic Star Ferry for the stunning views. Take the ferry from Kowloon to Tsim Sha Tsui to visit the Harbour City Shopping Centre. There you’ll find Zara, H&M, Chanel, Gucci and every other major international designer. It’s a great chance to get out of the heat (hello air-conditioning) and shop at stores we don’t have in Australia. Make sure to look out for the hundreds of expats getting ready to take private yachts onto the harbour.

This plan left us a day to relax and return to our favourite places again. Unfortunately on the fourth day I got very ill but we still felt like we had a full trip. Get on your bike Aussies, Hong Kong is calling.
