Travel Tales: Lisa O’Brien

Favourite travel destination? Why?: Croatia. The enchanting old towns. The untouched islands. The knee-weakening scenery. The warm, welcoming people.

Worst travel experience? What happened?: Three months working as a housekeeper in an English hotel. See any episode of Fawlty Towers to get the gist of what happened on a daily basis.

Best tips for beating jetlag?: Get straight onto local time – don’t succumb to that sexy siren of sleep! Even if this means propping your eyes open with matchsticks for a couple of hours, it’ll be worth it.

What is the one thing you don’t leave home without (apart from your passport and ticket)?: My trusty pink camera. I have been told more than once that I must have been a Japanese tourist in a past life.

Do you stay in touch with people while you’re travelling?: Just enough to let them know that I’m still alive – they will have to endure enough of my rambling when I return! Usually I just use email and Facebook (the latter purely for jealousy-inducing status updates).

Best meal you’ve ever had while travelling?: Massaman curry made with kangaroo and macadamia nuts, on the back of a 40’ foot yacht in the Whitsundays with eight of my closest friends, feeling like we were a million miles away from the rest of the world.

Best kiss?: Standing in the shadow of Dubrovnik’s city walls at dusk and watching the lights twinkle on the water in Pile Bay.

Best/scariest/funniest drive?: One of my favourite drives is right here in Oz – cruising along the coastal road from Cairns to Port Douglas with the sparkling blue water, abandoned beaches and a panoramic vista at every turn instantly puts you into holiday mode.

What has been the big WOW moment of your travelling life?: Turning around a corner and being stopped dead in my tracks by the Coliseum looming before me, stunned to the point that the only thing I could think was, ‘Holy crap, I’m in Rome’.
