The Top 10 Travel Highlights (so far)

the-top-10-travel-highlights-so-farI have a highlight reel that I run through my mind whenever I think about my travels; favourite moments that I flash back to with a sense of dumbfounded elation; ‘How did I wind up there?’

Here’s my Top 10 Travel Highlights (this week, anyway):

1. Watching the sun rise over Macchu Picchu

2. Sitting on top of a dune watching the sunset in the Stony Desert, Australia

3. Watching elephants drink from a natural mineral spring in Botswana

4. Kayaking through a cave into a hidden lake in Halong Bay, Vietnam

5. Standing in a waterfall in Nakhonsithammarat, Thailand, surrounded by thousands of tiny silver fish that kept ‘kissing’ my legs

6. Being ‘poled’ through the Okavango Delta in Botswana in a mokoro (dug out canoe) surrounded by pink, purple, yellow and white waterlilies

7. Meeting an elephant for the first time at the River Kwai and feeling its snotty trunk wrap around my fingertips as I fed it bananas

8. White water rafting down the Zambezi River in Zambia

9. Mountain biking along beside a river deep in the Mekhong Delta while all the little village kids ran out to wave and yell, “Hello, hello!”

10. Eating lunch with my friends on top of Taquile, a high altitude island in the middle of Lake Titicaca, overlooking miles and miles of perfect blue sky and water

I could go on and on and on… so many good times…

Tell me, friends, what’s on your travel highlight reel? What pops into your head when you think about all the amazing stuff you’ve done?

  1. I would have to agree that watching the mist and the sun rise over Macchu Pichu is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. To add to that would be the Salt desert in Bolivia, bike riding down the ‘worlds most dangerous road’ in La Paz, the architecture of Hoi An in Vietnam and of course the food in Rome!

  2. Top ten travel highlights? Mmmm it’s funny I was actually just talking about another travel list the other day, The WORST places I’d ever stayed!
But my travel highlights would be
    1. Swimming in the crystal clear waters in Guam with fish swimming around my ankles.
    2. Helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.
    3. Walking through the front gate at Disneyland – cheesy I know but I loved it.
    4. Paris – need I say more.
    5. All of the museums and history that surrounds you in Washington DC
    6. An ancient temple built into the side of a mountain in a small town outside of Utsunomiya, Japan
    7.Vive Las Vegas baby!
8.A family holiday to Cairns with my mother and sister.
    9. Driving in Florida to the Everglades where I had a close encounter with an alligator and then heading towards the Keys. I want to go back and do more of the Keys cause it looked really beautiful.
    10. Climbing Mt Fuji. It was an excruciating experience as I was completely unprepared and I’m fairly certain it will be the one and only mountain I ever climb. But seeing the sun rise and then being above the clouds was pretty cool although I’m still not certain it compensates for the injuries I sustained.
